#fond i am SO FOND #i genuinely think the actor’s + director’s entire lack of shame about the character is what is what makes that pure charismatic rocket fuel #every other incarnation - even ones i love - let that sense of the ridiculous in #there’s always that creeping sense that they have to Prove Something to make it impressive rather than a man in tights #it’s slightly meta-commenting or self aware or it’s gritty or all of the above #superman 78 has this tone of absolute belief #it literally couldn’t matter less if someone laughed at this man#you can do that sure - but it would just love if you came along for the ride instead #the movie allows him the full force of it’s own confidence #it’s never for one minute second-guessing the audience reaction and trying to out-maneouvre an expected jibe #it’s the anti-whedon if you will #(whose super films are essentially the class clown routine of ‘i make fun of myself before you can so that i retain the upper hand’) #the absolute confidence in the material this film has! it doesn’t flinch/brace for audience impact even once! #just hearing the williams overture! CHILLS
